I finally have my Lazair back together and ready to fly, started pulling on the start cords and nothing. I have taken one of the engines off the aircraft and disassembled it enough to check out the ignition. All cleaned up and looking good but still no spark. These engines have not been run in two years but ran fine when I last tried to start them. And no one tried to start them since, what could have happened to both engines to cause a no spark problem? It's got me baffled. If anyone has any ideas pleas e-mail me at mmkarp@cc.usu.edu

Thanks

Marc

mmkarp,

How have the engine been stored?

Dry place i hope?

Make sure ignition switchs are on or Unplugged from engine.

Test coil for open. Since you had a look at ignition I assume the points are ok.

But it sounds like you done most of this already.

Hope this helps , Lz

Best bet is to change the points and condensers. More than likely they needed changing before the engines quit firing. Not saying it couldn't be something else (coils, switches, ect...) but the points are usually the source for this aggravation. Re-time with TDC gauge and multi-meter and you should be back in action.

185 no start --- NO SPARK
COIL
POINTS and or CONDERSOR
COIL GAP TO FLYWHEEL
POSSIBLE DEAD SHORT TO GROUND ON KILL WIRE OR WIRE INSIDE?

Hope this helps

I have the same problem, except these engines have never been run, and everything in the ignition area looks pristine.

Could someone describe the parts and where the wiring goes, and its function.

My guess is that under the fly wheel you have the Black encased part which i assume is the spark coil.

One end goes to the sparkplug and the other wire out of the black part goes to the condenser.....which in turn hooks up to the points and then ground ????

The black banana jack is a bypass to ground from the points???

Then there is another exposed coil under the flywheel with a red banana plug.....is it a power source for lights etc ????? .....How many volts would it produce?

There is a bare wire exiting the black part which hooks up to the condenser, and it looks suspicious, because is it pushed up against the casing, probably grounding it.
My guess is that this is the problem, since a grounded condenser at both poles makes it pretty much useless. I presume the condenser case is the other pole, unless there is another side and wire to it that I can not see under the flywheel.

Any comments or suggestions?

I took the beast apart and found that all I had thought, to be true, and apparently
the only thing wrong is that the condenser seems to be shorted out....internally I presume.

I ordered new ones for $2.99 each, but noticed that some Lazair related sites like to charge $24.95 for a condenser.

How rediculous is that!!!!!

Try www.mfgsupply.com they have fair prices and most things that you would need to find for your Rotax 185

I've already bought some carb gasket sets from them as well... $4.99.

Good job Ray,

I always like to hear about when people solve new problems they know nothing about with the proper approach, the right can-do attitude, and on the cheap! Good on ya.

I hope to report on my website the whole JPX engine rebuild so that the next person who wants to do this will have a resource that I don't have... I have found a source for new bearings for the JPX, head gaskets, base gaskets, all that's left is the connecting rod, piston and rings... and i'm pretty sure they are yamaha gear... as well as new ignition parts. Once I get a beast apart I will start that search as well.

I've even found a supplier for new Dellorto carbs, although they are quite pricy ($150US new). I am hoping they sell rebuild kits as well, jets, needles, etc etc... The recoil starter is off a honda rototiller. Shorty, I have a JPX information manual if you can email me your fax number I'll send it on. Has all the specs and torque values required.
