New engines

Anyone with experience with Solo engines with redrives? I am looking for new engines for more reliabiliy, good fuel economy and more effecient propellers(with electric start). I think only 2 blade props for less drag in case of an engine out. I think about 96(38") or 110(43.3") cm dia blades. What pitch would work best for cruising and take off performance/and redrive ratios.
Would like your opinions.

Have you looked at the JPX D330. Not all that much more expensive than the Solo 210 or Hirth F-36 by the time those engines are equipped with redrives and props. The JPX D330 is very lightweight and puts out around 18-20hp. It can be run direct drive or redrive with electric start, high energy ignition, 400hr TBO, opposed firing sequence for reduced vibration and standard stainless exhaust. Nice engine.

Daffy, Have you seen this conversion ?
Guy from out west but he does not post here for some reason.

You have rotax now? And they not dependable?

This discussion will bering out the naysayers.

Also what series Lazair do you have ?

:) The engines I have are JPX 425 and I like them except for the hugh amount of fuel they consume, and now can't get new parts for them. I am writing off JPX for good. I'm leaning towards smaller, lighter engines with redrives to have at least the same amount of thrust as the JPX'S. My plane is a 1981 series 2 with almost every update put on it. I am looking for reliability and better fuel economy so I can stay in the air longer. Also Lazair's only weak spot was the small props in direct drive configuration (very inefficient), so going with redrives should improve performance with out going to big engines. (opinions?)
Can you buy brand new Rotax 185's today?
The Hirth F36(14.5hp) is another possibility but the Solo's(12hp) are lighter and have been around for a long time. Oh by the way, the 3 blade prop shown on Carel's plane, wouldn't that cause more drag if one engine quits? Aren't 2 blade props more efficient?
I started out with 185 Rotaxes and had two engine outs, but that's another long story...

Hi Daffy, Cannot not comment on Carel's Palne as he has not been responding to requests to come over. I know he reads the sites but is a llittle gun shy. There are others as well but we all know who they are. Hence this un moderated forum.
But we certainaly welcome all lazair pilots and contributors to this site.
There is alot of knowledge out there to be had. The men have been separated from the boys now and the shit stops here.
While I on topic about SAFETY -- if you doing modifications make sure you know what you are doing.

Look at Aircrash in Canada this week a real tragedy and totally prevenable. but 2 died.

A real waste of 2 fine folks.

TOPIC 185s -- yes Excellent engine 40 yrs or so now it been going for. and over 20 years on the Lazair.

New yes you can buy new.

Redrives are more efficient yes.

More performance ? yes

But 185s on Lazair do a great job as well even with bi - props.

It comes down to anything can be done for a price.

If i want to fly faster i jump in c 185
or faster a mooney or glasair.

If you want Lazy in the Air well Lazair pretty well says it all.

Can't argue against the irritation of not being able to get JPX 425 parts. There is nothing to say this will not happen with F-36s, 185s, or 330s for that matter in the future. You can still buy new 185s. A shortblock is over $1100 US. Re-drive F-36's are nearly $2000 US with all the goodies. JPX 330s are $2400 US.

Fuel consumption will be high on the D330s. As stated From 2-6 liters per/hr roughly .75 to 2.0 gph maybe. Interestingly the fuel consumption apparently gets better ? at higher rpms according to the chart. If I'm reading the chart correctly.

In comparsion and according to the F-36 chart the fuel consumption of the F-36 will actually be high. If you notice the chart reads 2/gph at 5,000 and 2.25/gph at 6,000.

Fuel consumption for Solo 210 seems to closer to 185 consumption rate. Around 1 to 1.2/ gph.

Note: Fuel consumption for 185s using more efficient P-tip props has decreased by small margin.

It is hard to say what the negative effects of the 3-blade F-36 props would be. It is possible that you get a good degree of drag from the three blade props. Probably not enough to be a problem single engine. It would be interesting to know how the plane handles when power is reduced to idle on both engines. Engines at idle or engine off sink rate may be of the rock variety. Hard to say, hard to get any info from those planning to use or using these engines. 3 Lazairs were/are to be equipped with these engine. None flying yet evidently. No info has been shared and no indication that any will be.

Engine outs with 185s are to be expected as with any 2-stroke engine. The usual cause of 185 engine problems that lead to failure are discussed here continually. With proper knowledge, maintenance, and inspection chances for 185 failure can be reduced. I tend to think the 185 engine has always been the Lazairs stong point. The original inefficient bi-prop propellers may be the real "weak" spot if any. All around the 185 can't be beat when ALL things are considered.

This are interesting. 5 more years of development, who knows, a 4-stroke powered Lazair possibly ??
