Harnessing engine Rotax lighting coil power

I wanted to start this thread in order to find out what others might have done to
get power from the lighting coil on the Rotax 185's or similar engine.

The red jack allows electrical power to be extracted from the engine.

Im thinking it might be suitable for a simple tachometer connection, and also for providing power to some strobes so we are more visible to the faster aircraft.

The power is likely AC and Im not sure how many volts or current draw is possible.

Add what you know to this thread and we can all gain some valuable knowledge here for our neat ideas.

hi ray you will find this type of lighting coil on some ag bikes and are used as that to run a light without a battery a basic way to be road legal or find your way back to the barn the globe does not care if it is acca or dacca. the light will brighten and dim with the rpms only when you wish to charge a battery to have stable or constant voltage to powere somthing that needs constant dc power you will have to fit a voltage rectifyer to prevent overcharging and convert to dc. your altanater in your car is ac converted this way if i remember rightley. you will recognize a rectifyer as a small box that is finned to expell the heat that is generated when the bat is charged excess power is converted to heat and expelled via the zenier diode to the heat sink they get quite warm. the ones that are supplied with the bigger rotaxs have been known to be unreliable and boil batteries dry and fry radios a chap here has made a replacment type that is much more stable and most pilots toss the rotax ones and fit his one i don't know if someone has done this on your side of the world maybe a phone call to the rotax expert at ultraflight radio can explain it better or more correctly than i have. ozzie

that was a great video of the lazair flying it took 13 hrs to download even with the accelerator must take forever with normal dialup lucky those who have broadband. well worth watching great countryside i'd forrgotten what GREEN grass looks like very little of it here even in the city now.

Lighting coil is 6v ac out. Could possibly use bridge rectifier to change to 6v dc, and use voltage doubler to get 12v out. Not much current available for higher consumption rates.

or you could link the two engines and get 12 volts

My plane was equiped with a tach connected to the lighting jack. I do not have the tach setup right now. I hope to reconnect it in the spring. Perhaps we will have some time while the engine is on the test stand to see what current can be drawn from the coil and still maintain the 6 vac. George has left the coil off so it will be later in the year.

An interesting term there! Caloric values- Is that is the heat range of the plug? And the manual is from the pump? I've Never seen it before.
