So there i was, decarboning my engines...

I prefer to take the cyl off when doing this as the last couple I decarboned had stuck rings.

Anyway, so did this one. I pulled off the piston to soak it and realized i hadn't checked to see how it was oriented to the rod and case first. There is a right and wrong way to put these on.

I checked the manual and it says to face the arrow inside the piston towards the exhaust. No problem. However, the picture in the manual of where the exhaust should be is different from out engines.

Issue 1 of the manual shows the exhaust port on the decompression valve side of the engine.....

Any takers on this one??? are we putting our carbs on teh wrong side for some reason or is the picture wrong?

same picture but mine also show's the decompression valve (Switch Assembly c/w cable R243)

Well to be honest I don't know why the picture depicts the compression release hole on the exhaust side. As these engines were originally developed quite a while back I'd imagine they have undergone quite a few changes. One old set of engines I have are equipped with a removeable side cover on the case (see pic). If I'm not wrong new 185 blocks have no provision for a compression release in the cylinder.

The cylinder has a small pilot hole drilled in it that matches the carb gaskets and carb, and is not present on the exhaust side of the cylinder. I am pretty sure that we have it right.

I guess the very old ones must have been a little different. The studs are a different size, the port is a different shape. I don't think you could accidentally put the carb on the exhaust side.

Even in the picture on the front page of my old manual, the carb is on the right looking from the starter end.
