I saw photos on Lazair site of Carels gear and shocks. Can anyone familiar with it comment on it. I emailed him asking questions but he never responded. Is the nose wheel steerable? It looks like a tricycle gear. Is it still a taildragger? What's up with the shocks? Art

It does seem Carel has a communication problem. Lots of people were interested in his project and has done a terrible job of responding to those who inquired. His last postings to the Flyers forum indicated he (or someone) had flown the airplane once but nothing other than "it flew great" was granted for the benefit of the crowd. Since that time he stated in a subsequent posting he had extended the ailerons to 9 feet long but no further details have been given.

Carels Series 2 was already equipped with the custom wide gear and steerable nosewheel when he purchased the plane. This may be one reason why he does not have any in-depth information on that aspect of the plane. That's the way he purchased the plane basically ? Originally the plane was equipped with Rotax 185s which he sold to Scott MaCarthy in Rhode Island. Carel later added a fiberglass nosefairing from Mike Mckusick.

It is unknown exactly what structural upgrades were done to the airfame for usage of the Hirth F-36 engines with reduction and 42" Powerfin props. It is doubtful that any modifications whatsoever were done as the plane still had what appeared to be the original yellow covering that was on the plane when it was purchased in 2002 or 2003.

In all probability this aircraft will never see the air. Heavy modification of this aircraft will in all probability give it undesirable flying characteristics and/or make it unsafe and unstable. A resonable person understands that the Lazair went through two major revisions before engines of high HP/thrust were installed.

Don't forget that external wing tanks were also slung underneath the wings at the wing to strut attach point. That surely isn't a very good idea. What started out as just a simple Series 2 has been metamorphed into quite a different animal.
