I have one wing here in my shop now and I have a few questions about rebuilding ribs. I was considering the possibility of repairing them, but twenty years of neglect and sitting outside doesn't give me very much of a warm and fuzzy.

What glue is best to use between the foam rib and the aluminum cap?

What foam do you suggest that I use? The blue styrofoam(2 lb/ft) that Aircraft Spruce sells looks good to me. (Page 37)

What's a good source of supply for the straping tape?

I guess that I just use the old ribs as a template for the airfoil shape. I am fortunate to have a brand new original rib that my uncle had that I can copy. I have a homebuilt power supply and hot wire device to cut the foam, hopefully that will make forming the ribs easier.

Someday I'll have more answers than questions,

Dave... The ribs are Blue Dow from any building supply... the tape is standard strapping tape... the glue is Hysol grey epoxy... good for aluminum and foam...

your ribs may be fine... sand and clean up sides to new foam... see how they look tape them, then paint or cover the foam with aluminized mylar like someone hear did... You should be able to tell if the ribs are still good...

If you make ribs... you will need to trace the shape onto a surface... then assemble... then before setting aside for glue to harden..check that your taping the rib did not change the shape.

Ribs are easy to make... and are quite a bit stronger than need be for normal flight... Fran use to fly with all his ribs just wobbly wooped from way overspeed, g's and destructive control surface flapping...

The ribs are still fairly stiff. (I used the ever popular calibrated elbow method to detirmine that) There is about 1/4 to 3/8 crap foam on the outsides so instead of repair them, I figure that it's better to replace them all together. Thanks for the info on what type of glue to use.

Shannon and Tyler, What type of glue have you guys used?

I apolozize for not saying thanks for the help. I did in fact get some PL Premium glue and some foam. So far, I can't seem to find thin strapping tape localy, I did find some 3/4" but I guess that I'll have to order.

I have all the ribs cleaned up and off of the d-cell. Now I am shaping the new foam and I am very glad that I am rebuilding them as the foam is incredibly easy to work with.

I won't get any work done on it next week as I have to go to some Coast Guard simulator training down in Mobile, AL. Shannon, that's right near you isn't it? Maybe I could swing by and say hi.
