Hi All,
i am going to do the spar strengthing mod and have read the instructions. but would like to clarify a couple of things. It says in the diagram that it is the inside view of the spar that is i take it that the angles go inside the box not on the easily visible side. i ask as i saw a photo that had them on the outside. also the doubler on the R8 rib, is it the same thickness as the rib material? The instructions are not as complete as the jury strut mod is as it shows material used.
thanks
ozzie

Ozzie,

I ended up putting my box stiffners on the outside too, and they will esentially do the same thing as on the inside.

The R-8 Rib stiffner I made was made out of .032 2024T-3.

Hi Ozzy,
I mounted my spar stiffners on the inside for one reason. I looked at the thickness of the stiffner and found it to be thicker than the spar box material. So for the pop rivet to hold well, I installed the stiffner on the inside, and had the flat head of the pop river on the spar box side, for maximum holding power. When you pop the rivet, I think the small end of the rivet should always be in the thicker material side. Just my two cents worth. Daffy

Hi,
yes i think that is the way i'll do it. it will look neater and and looking at a damaged spar box it looks like all the load acts inward. i am using a spare C3 capstrip for the R8. It looks a little broader than the drawing but thats ok. and i like the idea of using double sided tape in locating them. i stripped a spar down for rebuild while back and found that they used tape on the spar cap channells. i had to use steam to remove them without damage after drilling out the rivets. it must add to the overall strength of the structure. keeps the dirt and moisture out as well.
thanks ozzie
