Does anyone know if this engine would be adaptable for use on a Lazair

im sure the kt100 would fit on a lazair, if my 185 messed up that what i would buy. i used tthe kt100 on a gokart and it was flawless, i was impressed with the beating it took

you could put a V8 on the lazair if you tried hard enough. one of the main considerations for a new engine on a lazair are the crank bearings - can they take a thrust load. most cart engines run a belt and so the loads are radial. direct drive, the prop tries to pull the crank out of the engine block and so the bearings must be designed to take this style of load.

or you can build a redrive if the bearings aren't proper.

...or you can buy two new powerplants on ebay for under $600 :)

Help me here, the KT100 @ 97 cc
does it compare with the pioneers at 5 HP each ?
Since it is 88 cc less than the Rotax 185 s...

Is it a quality engine?
How about weight?

Yes re drives would get around part of the bearing problem.

:) i don't know about size/weight... all i know is there are 4 choices for engines for lazairs that were factory installations (and more i suppose if you include the ones they didn't go with like ultra 342).

I've been parts scrounging/grazing for about 3 or 4 years now, and if i bought all the parts that i've come across i could have had 100 rotax 185s for cheap. with parts still available for these engines i scratch my head at why someone would want to switch over to a smaller non-proven engine that will undoubtedly require some modification to either airframe/mount/propeller. if you like that sort of thing, then by all means go for it - but if you want to fly there are many 185's for sale over the course of a year.

once a week just do a google search for "lazair for sale" and keep an eBay search open for "rotax 185" and the internet will tell you where the gems are.

all that being said, it seems like the lazair would perform best with a 15hp engine. the 185 is fine for swelte pilots around 160 pounds. for larger pilots though more power is needed to keep up. if you can find a good 15hp engine that seems convertable you would have a winner there - and not one of those 10,000 rpm "15hp" cart screamers........

and with that being said, a 185 with a redrive and larger propeller is probably almost the same as a direct drive 15hp engine....and there may be redrives available in the near future.

Hi huronflyer,
My first ultralight had this engine on it. It was called a Birdman Atlas (similiar to the Quicksilver). Off my memory, I think it was 15 hp at 12,000 rpm and had a redrive to drive a lage prop. It also had a clutch to disengage at idle. This was a racing gokart engine originally. I never kept the ultralight very long, so I can't say how reliable it is. But it was quite a perfomer. Daffy

Engine options -- has been problematic from the start, mostly because of price.
Though my own engine needs seem to be satisfied for the time being, the selection of engines with the reduction already installed is quite impressive.

And for the most part they are all in Europe and with the exception of the Swedish Raket engine, the price for one engine is more than I paid for the whole plane.

yes well if we're dreaming, if i had 12,000 dollars i would gladly spend the time putting a pair of these on a two-seater

25HP Radial for $6000

check out that video and tell me you didn't drool over the sound of that engine - imagine a pair of them...........

Just thinking ahead. We have the 185's and they are performing well but how many hours can you expect out them? Also, a few more horses would be nice. Can you get new 185 parts from a dealer or do you have to hope to find someone with the used part that you need? A new 10 to 15 HP engine in the 500.00 to 700.00 dollar range would be nice.

I checked into these at catusaviation.com 3W170iB2 it's a 19.5 HP twin weighs 8lbs $1895 the draw back is no recoil or electric start from the factory. They're claiming 2000hrs before rebuild. sorry I don't know how to creat a lynk.
