widening of landing gear on series2

I have a December 2000 issue of Kitplanes magasine that in story the authors rebuilt two lazairs and widened the lazairs wheelbase to 64 inch using 4130 steel tube and replaced the wheel barrel wheels to Azusa wheels.I'm going to try to contact them via e-mail. Does anybody have pictures of similar mods?

Why do this when you can make the factory mods? Steel is heavy too!

I had to search our database, but i recall the gear.

Adam hunt from COPA sent thisi n last year.

nice gear, but how strong is that?
I would think maybe a cable to span across from each spinle would make it stronger as well. Lazair only wieghts 450 gross or less. you could make a ser1 or 2 a full taildragger this way too. Which imo is better anyhow.

and 4130 is chrome moly and not heavy at all. and VERY strong.


looks like a nice start for an amphib gear too.

Thanks to the administrator for searching and finding the pictures of Adam Hunt's plane and for the rough plans of the Dalke Gear. To the unregistered guest, I forgot to mention that during the wheel barrel wheels being replaced by the Azusa wheels and a new steel axle and gear legs giving the lazair a 64 inch wheelbase, they reduced the plane's empty weight by 5.5 pounds. Even though steel is heavier than aluminum, you forgot to take in consideration the weight of the wheel barrel wheels versus the lighter Azusa wheels.

I was told by a source (you know who you are) that this Dalke gear was inadequate in design and was prone to failure with one hard landing.

I saw photos on Lazair site of Carels gear and shocks. Can anyone familiar with it comment on it. I emailed him asking questions but he never responded. Is the nose wheel steerable? It looks like a tricycle gear. Is it still a taildragger? What's up with the shocks? Art

shannon, i concur there too. it looks kinda weak with out any gussets or bracing on the downwrd portions.
that is why i suggested a cable across. and on a slow lazair the cable will not give and drag that you would notice. only problem is in tall grass the cable could snag the grass.

i knew a guy 20 years ago that made a fiberglass mono leaf that bolted on simular to that dalke gear. man if you bounced her -- you was going airbourne again!! . but it was a pretty bump absorbing gear.

personally i like the ser 3 gear the best and keep your tires soft for cushion. (how does that saying go? The more the cushion the better the pushin ? LOL ) :D :lol: B) :blink: :unsure: :ph34r:

I think that Orsons has the same gear on his plane, howrver it was modified by adding gussets to the assembly between the downward angled leg and the bottom of the tube. I don't know what his opinion is of the mod yet, maybe he'll post an answer.
